Elon Musk's 14 children: Meet Tesla CEO's sons, daughters and everything you need to know about their lives

Elon Musk , who is internationally renowned for disrupting electric cars, space exploration, and artificial intelligence, has also made headlines for his complicated private life. Throughout the last two decades, Musk has fathered 14 children with five different women, amassing a big and frequently sensationalised family. As his career successes command attention, his increasingly prominent role as a father—and the unconventional status of his relationships—has incited increasing public interest and media attention. From co-parenting plans to surprise announcements, Musk's personal life has been a side plot to his public career, demonstrating how his reach goes far beyond the tech industry and into social and personal conversation.

Elon Musk's journey into fatherhood began with the tragic death of his first child

Musk's life as a father started in tragedy. In 2002, he and his then-wife, Canadian writer Justine Wilson, had their first child, Nevada Alexander Musk. But their joy did not last long. At 10 weeks of age, Nevada sadly passed away due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Wilson has since described the ordeal in a 2010 Marie Claire essay, disclosing that Nevada had ceased breathing while napping. Despite efforts by paramedics to revive him, brain death resulted from the lack of oxygen. Three days afterward, the pair made the heartbreaking decision to remove him from life support. Wilson wrote of cradling him in her arms as he died — an unthinkable loss that would set the tone for the early years of their family life.

Elon Musk and Justine’s journey through IVF led to six children

Justine and Elon sought IVF to attempt to recover from the loss. Within less than two months of Nevada's passing away, Wilson went to a fertility clinic, resolute to have additional children. In the course of the following five years, she bore five more children: twins in 2004 and triplets in 2006.

One of the twins was Xavier Musk, later to reveal she was transgender and legally have her name changed to Vivian Jenna Wilson. She petitioned for court papers for a name change and a gender change, in addition to asking for legal dissociation from her father in 2022, declaring directly she no longer desired "to be related to her biological father in any way, shape or form." The court issued the petition permission in June the same year.

Since then, Vivian has been vocal about how she had a strained and painful relationship with Musk. She has made allegations against him in interviews and social media posts for being absent in her childhood and for politicizing her gender identity. In July 2024, when Musk asserted that he was "tricked" into endorsing her gender-affirming treatment, Vivian reacted on Threads, saying that her father hardly involved himself in her childhood and constantly belittled her femininity. She blamed him for using her identity as a weapon to gain public sympathy and manipulate her. Meanwhile, Griffin, Vivian's twin, has lived a comparatively private life, making public appearances only from time to time. In May 2024, he was spotted with Musk at an American Express event in Miami. Musk later revealed Griffin in a post on X, calling him his oldest son.

The triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian were born in 2006 and have mostly avoided the limelight. But in Walter Isaacson's 2023 biography Elon Musk, it was discovered that Damian is a talented classical musician with a passion for science. He became a vegetarian at age eight to reduce his carbon footprint, according to reports. Musk's own mother once remarked about Damian, "I think he's brighter than you," speaking of Elon himself.

Elon Musk and Grimes welcomed three children whose names stirred worldwide curiosity

Musk started a romantic relationship with Canadian musician Grimes (Claire Boucher) in 2018. Their union added three more children to his expanding family — each of them differently named and born into a whirlwind of public fascination. Their son, born in May 2020, was named X Æ A-12, a name that baffled the internet. Grimes clarified that "X" represented the unknown, "Æ" was her elven spelling of artificial intelligence ("AI"), and "A-12" was a reference to a spy plane that flew at high altitudes. The name was subsequently changed for legal purposes to X Æ A-Xii, although he is usually called "X."

X has been seen with Musk at numerous functions, such as business seminars and, most famously, a 2025 White House visit to witness Donald Trump sign an executive order. Grimes subsequently said she was shocked and upset to hear of her son's appearance at the event through social media, stating that she had not been told and would have liked him not to be out in public without her knowledge. Grimes and Musk had a daughter through surrogate in December 2021. Her name, Exa Dark Sideræl, took computing nomenclature ("Exa" for exaFLOPS) and symbolism from deep space. Grimes referred to "Dark" as something denoting the unknown, and to "Sideræl" as mystical for "sidereal," the unit of cosmic time. The name also references The Lord of the Rings' Galadriel. Subsequently, Grimes disclosed that the child is referred to as Y, or even "?", but legal officials would not accept those as formal names.

Their third child, Techno Mechanicus, was born in June 2022. Also referred to as "Tau," his birth was a secret until it was disclosed in Isaacson's biography. Grimes said he was soulful and otherworldly, likening him to the Star Trek character Spock. Even though fans were curious, she has refused to post pictures of Tau, saying she wanted to keep him private.

Elon Musk’s relationship with Shivon Zilis brought four more children into his growing legacy

While Musk was still dating Grimes, he also had children with Shivon Zilis, a Neuralink executive. She gave birth to twins, Strider and Azure, in Austin, Texas, in November 2021. The relationship and births were kept secret until court documents came to light in 2022, revealing that the couple had submitted paperwork to officially change the names of the babies to incorporate both Musk's and Zilis's last names. In February 2024, Musk and Zilis had a third child, a daughter, Arcadia. Musk publicly confirmed the birth later that summer. The following year, Zilis marked Arcadia's birthday with a tearful post on X saying, "Mommy loves you with all her heart."

In January 2025, Zilis announced the birth of a fourth child with Musk — Seldon Lycurgus. The date of birth is not stated but she described her son as "built like a juggernaut, with a solid heart of gold." The name selection throughout her children with Musk indicate futuristic and mythological leanings, consistent with Musk's own vision for the future of humanity.

Elon Musk and Shivon Zilis secretly welcomed four children into his growing family

In February 2025, right-wing commentator Ashley St. Clair made the announcement that she had given birth to a child fathered by Musk. She stated the baby, born in September 2024, had been kept out of the public conversation to shield his safety but, after rumors started circulating, had been compelled to corroborate the news.

St. Clair clarified that she wanted to raise their son in a private and stable setting and requested the media to respect the boundary. Musk replied online that he had transferred $2.5 million to her and was paying her an annual allowance of $500,000. However, St. Clair refuted this version of events, charging him with economic coercion and punishative behavior after she purportedly disobeyed him.

The name of the child — Romulus — was subsequently verified in April 2025, and in addition, a Labcorp paternity test with 99.9999% probability that Musk is his father. The representative of St. Clair verified both the child's name and the test results.

Musk plans united home for kids with strict inheritance rules

With kids dispersed over a number of homes, Musk has been said to ponder how to bring his big, mixed family together. In late 2024, according to the sources that Musk and Grimes were scouting out real estate in Bel Air to possibly build a communal home for his kids and their moms. This arrangement would be extremely atypical, but hardly surprising considering Musk's habits and aspirations.

When it comes to inheritance, Musk has made it clear that he does not want to automatically leave his wealth or businesses to his children. During a 2023 interview at The Wall Street Journal's CEO Council, Musk said that he would only do so if his children showed interest, capability, and willingness to run his business assets.
