No. 5 needs different performance metrics: Rahul Dravid

Dravid backs struggling Dhruv Jurel, says he only gets to face limited number of deliveries

JAIPUR: IPL 2025 has been a challenging season for Dhruv Jurel, raising questions about his role in the Rajasthan Royals (RR) lineup.

After a promising start — a 70 off 35 balls against SRH — Jurel’s performances have tapered off, leading RR head coach Rahul Dravid to clarify that middle-order batters like Jurel have to be judged differently in T20s.

“With someone like Dhruv, you have to be careful. We only look at numbers... the Orange Cap and Purple Cap, and we say they are the ones who have performed. But who are those guys? You can only be an opener or a No. 3 to have those kinds of numbers or those kinds of stats in the IPL,” Dravid said.

Who's that IPL player?

“The performance metrics for someone who is batting at No. 5 like Jurel has to be very different. Even if you look at that (numbers), yes, maybe (in) one or two close games, he would have liked to have won those games. But to be honest his performance has been very good,” Dravid said during the Star Sports Press Room show.

On Thursday, too, Jurel’s performance against MI was underwhelming, reflecting the broader struggles he’s faced this season. However, Dravid backed Jurel. “In T20s, if you are only getting 10 balls to play, 15 balls to play, how do you compare that with someone who starts the innings and gets to play 60 balls? There can never be a like-to-like comparison. We need to be careful around that. So judging Jurel for not having a good season would be wrong, in my assessment,” Dravid said.

Jurel’s tendency to consume too many balls during critical run chases have been a talking point. Against RCB, he scored just 18 runs off his first 23 balls and was criticised for slowing down RR’s chase. Against DC and LSG, the wicketkeeper-batter’s pattern of conservative batting and poor strike rotation became a key factor in RR losing those two games.
