Ranchi: The election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost, as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday in the Vatican City has brought joy across Jharkhand. From Ranchi to Daltonganj, the faithful gathered in parishes to pray, celebrate and reflect on what many described as a new era for the church.

Father David Xalxo of St Mary's Cathedral, Ranchi, expressed deep emotion at the announcement by the Vatican. "Pope Leo XIV brings with him a legacy of missionary zeal and pastoral care. He is known for walking with the poor, uplifting the forgotten, and carrying the gospel in action. His election is not just symbolic, it is a spiritual renewal," he said

In Palamau, the Daltonganj Catholic Diocese issued a formal statement on Friday, praising Pope Leo XIV for his compassionate presence among the suffering and his alignment with the teachings of St Augustine.

Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas called the moment historic, describing Leo XIV's papacy as one rooted in humility and service. "His episcopal ministry identifies with the faith of the people but also emphasises his role as a consecrated shepherd," the bishop said.

In Jamshedpur, Anjali Rozario, a catholic, recalled watching the white smoke rise from the Sistine Chapel. "When I saw the plume on TV and the announcement from the chapel's balcony, it brought tears. Knowing the cardinals, in such a solemn prayer, chose someone who understands the suffering and wants reform," she said

Another local from Dhurwa, Arvind Paul, added, "The conclave is not just a tradition. It's a powerful act of divine trust. Pope Leo XIV's election makes us feel seen. The Church of Rome has looked beyond Europe."
