Luca Brecel has revealed his recent withdrawals from snooker competitions are down to a series of health problems. The Belgian ace won the World Championship two years ago and has been ranked as high as second in the world.

Brecel pulled out of qualifiers for the Wuhan and British Opens, as well as matches in the Championship League and the ongoing Saudi Arabia Masters. His no-shows had raised eyebrows, but Brecel has since taken to social media to explain why he hasn't been involved in tournaments.

Posting on social media, Brecel said: "Hi everyone, some of you might have been wondering why I am not participating in snooker events since April. The truth is that I am suffering with health problems.

"Me and my team are doing everything we can to come out of this stronger and better than before. It's been really frustrating to not be able to travel and compete in tournaments! But... I always choose to be optimistic! Tough times often lead to something great!"

Brecel was due to play against Sanderson Lam at the Saudi Arabia Masters on Sunday, but the Englishman has now received a bye into the next round. It's the latest blow for Brecel, who has endured a torrid time of things since winning the World Championship.

Having been second in the world post-Crucible win, Brecel now finds himself 39th in the rankings following a dismal couple of years on tour. It's a position which could limit his access to the main draws of certain tournaments, but Brecel was keen to see the positive side when quizzed earlier this year.

Speaking in April, he said: "There's also a good side [to not being in the top 16], less travelling maybe, less extra tournaments so for me it's maybe better. I enjoy the qualifiers to be honest, I don't need to be on the TV table, I like being on the outside table as well. For me it's all about playing snooker."

Brecel's next chance to play, health permitting, will likely come in the Xi'an Grand Prix qualifiers next month. Also being held in September is the Northern Ireland Open, but given the specifics surrounding his health scare aren't known, fans might have to wait a little longer before he's back on the table. His absence is a big blow for the sport, given Brecel is one of snooker's top performers - and characters - on his day.
