confirmed that his future lies away from Manchester United, despite still being contracted to the club. Sancho helped Chelsea to European glory in Poland, scoring the third of their four goals . The former winger is on loan to the Blues from United and capped off his year in London in style.
However, it is unclear exactly where his future lies. Chelsea do have an obligation to purchase the 25-year-old, but they can pay a reported £5million penalty to nullify that clause. It remains to be seen if they will opt to send Sancho back to Old Trafford, where he publicly fell out with Erik ten Hag before the Dutchman was sacked.
Sancho was spotted on his phone speaking to someone on the pitch while celebrations ensued around him. Asked if he was speaking to United boss , according to the , he replied: "No, I'm not coming back to ."
Sancho has had a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge, but was called upon off the bench against Betis and delivered, putting the game out of sight. He received the ball on the edge of the box, cut onto his favoured right foot and bent an effort into the top corner, taking his shirt off in celebration.
The passion on show was a clear indication that the winger wants to stay at Chelsea. But he knows at the very least, a return to United would only be temporary, if the Blues opt to pay a fee to avoid signing him permanently.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca claimed that no official decision had been made over whether or not Sancho would be retained for next season, when the Blues will be in the Champions League, though a summit in the next few days would provide the answer.
"I don't know," Maresca said on Tuesday when asked about Sancho's future. "I said that when in the last weeks you asked me about different players, I always said the same. And the reason why is because it's the truth.
"It's not the moment, we have tomorrow the final. Then in 24 hours, 48 hours, we're going to start to talk about the future. But at this moment, there is not any thought or any decision made on Jadon or any different players."
Blues hero Joe Cole, who featured on TNT Sports' coverage of the match, has called for Chelsea to sign Sancho permanently.
"I think Jadon is a really great player and I think he's done well," Cole said. "He's been rotated in and out a bit but I want to see Jadon playing. You want a player like that in your squad. It will come down to a financial decision I imagine but I really like him."
Asked if Sancho had done enough this season to earn a permanent place at the club, Cole replied: "Yes I do. This is a kid who went to Dortmund and was a superstar as a kid. It wasn't working at Man United but he's done well, he's got his career back on track at Chelsea. I think there's more to come from him as well."
