At any given moment, I am craving salt and vinegar crisps. It truly doesn't matter if it's first thing in the morning, after a big meal, or right before I go to sleep - offer me a bag of this moreish snack and the answer will always be yes.
However, not all salt and vinegar crisps are created equal. They've got to have a sharpness that almost knocks you out - with my favourites being Co-Op's Sea Salt and Chardonnay Vinegar (so good, no wonder they're out of stock) and the classic blue Squares. But if you can't get your hands on either of these, I've discovered a weird yet wonderful trick to boost the flavour of your salt and vinegar crisps - and it really does work.
The only thing I love more than salt and vinegar crisps is finding and trying out strange food hacks from TikTok. So when I came across one that promised to boost the flavour of these savoury snacks, I knew I had to give it a go.
Self-proclaimed foodie Liv Newman, who posts videos of herself trying out an array of different snacks, has recently been on a mission to find the most flavoursome salt and vinegar crisps - a task I can truly get behind.
In one of her clips however, someone commented with a strange suggestion. Apparenly, putting them in the freezer for a while doesn't just cool them down - it can make them taste a lot more potent.

I didn't even need to watch the full video of Liv trying it out. Straight out I went to my local Sainsbury's to pick up a packet of salt and vinegar crisps, which I took over to a friend's house that night, thinking it would work great as a group experiment.
However, we had to do it right. First, we tried the crisps as they were, and agreed that they were pretty good - but definitely not as sharp and tangy as they could be. I put some in a bowl to save for later, so we could compare them fairly.
Then, I opened the freezer and put the remainder of the bag of crisps inside. This felt fairly unnatural and something you'd do by accident, but they stayed there for about two hours, until it was time to take them out and see if the weird hack had worked.
Bringing the bag of frozen crisps back to the group, we tried the normal ones again just as a reminder, then got stuck into the very cold ones. And honestly? We all looked at each other in amazement - they genuinely did taste so much better.
I don't know how it happened, but the fact that the crisps were chilled brought out an intense vinegar flavour and even a hint of sweetness too that definitely wasn't there before. Trying a few more just to be absolutely sure, I could confirm that the freezer crisps were in fact a lot tastier than their non-frozen counterparts.
It's important to note that they don't actually freeze, but instead they're refreshingly cold and crispy. Don't ask what the science behind this is, it just works. So if you're like me and love your salt and vinegar crisps to be so flavourful they almost hurt your mouth, this strange trick is worth trying out.
