Wonky yellow lines in Norfolk village lead locals to say workers 'must have been drunk'

Council contractors in a Norfolk village have had to redo double yellow lines after the initial job was botched, leaving them embarrassingly wonky. The lines, which were painted in Old Hunstanton just before the summer holidays to deter irresponsible parking by visitors, have been ridiculed by residents for their shoddy appearance.

Some of the lines were even daubed across people's driveways, and one section seemed to be haphazardly painted over private property. A local dog walker quipped: "They must have been p***** when they painted them."

Nick Eastwell, chairman of Old Hunstanton Parish Council, said that villagers welcomed the idea of new parking restrictions as tourists swarmed their narrow lanes.

He pointed out that holidaymakers were trying to avoid the £10 daily fee at the nearby Cliff Top car park, causing inconvenience to residents. However, he conceded that the execution was subpar.

He added: "NCC Highways has readily acknowledged that their sub-contractor has done a very poor job lining Sea Lane and Waterworks Road. They confirmed that the lines will be redone as a matter of urgency. I think the first stab in those two roads did not enhance the look of the village."

A spokesperson for the county council said: "Unfortunately the double yellow lines at Old Hunstanton have not been installed to Norfolk County Council's specification or standards.

"Accordingly, we have requested the contractor to undertake remedial works as a matter of urgency. This work will be undertaken at no cost to Norfolk County Council."
