Nintendo Direct, the company's announcement reel, has not yet commented on the rumours, but gamers are hoping to see a few new projects confirmed by the company by 2pm today (September 12).
Today marks the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., and fans believe this could be the perfect time for new releases to be announced.
It's exciting news to many, but fans are split on whether an adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy to the big screen would work. It's a tall order considering the game, and its sequel, are highly regarded by gamers, ranking among many fans' favourite games of all time.
One took to X and wrote: "This was hands down one of the best Mario games I have ever played. I grew up playing this game, I even still have the copies of the game from their launch dates. I hope this happens."

Another added: "If this really happens, Mario Galaxy fans are going to be so happy." Whether an adaptation of the galaxy-conquering platformer released for the Nintendo Wii in 2007 comes to be is yet to be seen.
But film lovers and gamers are willing to give it a shot after the release of 2023's big-screen adaptation. One person wrote: "The IP is legendary, and the care and dedication put into these movies is next level."
Another suggested: "Nintendo is really going all-in on Mario's 40th." A third agreed, adding: "I mean if they did register a domain name then its literally just confirmed."
Though film fans are thrilled by the possibility of an announcement, some gamers believe it's also a brilliant sign for the game series. Those hoping for a third instalment believe the domain register for a movie means Super Mario Galaxy 3 is highly likely.
