Residents of Delhi NCR today woke up to heavy storms and intense rainfall. The powerful winds on Friday morning brought much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave. The weather is pleasant but the sudden change has also caused widespread disruption across the region.
IMD issues Red Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the day. The department has forecasted severe thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching 70–80 kmph. Parts of the region also witnessed hailstorms, adding to the weather chaos.
Several regions across Delhi-NCR, including Dwarka Underpass, South Extension, Ring Road, Minto Road, RK Puram, and Lajpat Nagar, reported severe waterlogging, leading to traffic snarls and public inconvenience. The downpour also resulted in the uprooting of trees and damage to power lines, further compounding the disruptions.
The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors, avoid taking shelter under trees, unplug electronic devices, and remain cautious around water bodies and electrical conductors. It also warned that kutcha houses and vulnerable structures could suffer partial damage due to flying debris and strong winds.
Flights disrupted
A metal structure at Terminal 3 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed due to the strong winds and heavy rain, according to a Times of India report. The incident affected flight operations, with delays and diversions reported. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) confirmed that inclement weather had impacted some flights. "Our ground teams are actively coordinating with all stakeholders to ensure passengers continue to have a smooth and efficient experience," DIAL said in a post on X at 5:20 am.
Air India also acknowledged weather-related disruptions. "Some of our flights to and from Delhi are experiencing delays or diversions, which could impact our overall schedule. We are working hard to minimize the inconvenience," the airline stated in an X post at 5:51 am.
Today’s weather forecast includes thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds, with the maximum temperature likely to touch 39°C and the minimum around 27°C. The IMD has also issued a yellow warning for the next three days, predicting continued heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and storms in the region.
Authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories amid the ongoing extreme weather.
