What is the Territorial Army
The Territorial Army is a part-time, volunteer force that works in the second line after the Indian Army. Especially during an emergency, these soldiers serve the nation, while during peace time they continue civilian work. If we go into history, the Territorial Army was first formed in 1949. After this, the Territorial Army has participated in many operations till now, including the 1962 India-China War, the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan, the Kargil conflict, Jammu and Kashmir, and Northeast operations.

How can you apply?

Any common citizen can join the Territorial Army; for this, he has to pass an examination. Applications for this are starting from May 12. Only those who are between 18 and 42 years of age can apply; that is, they should be at least between 18 and 42 years of age on June 10, 2025.

Key criteria for application

Nationality: Indian citizens only (male and female)

Age limit: 18 to 42 years as on the last date of filing the application form i.e., minimum 18 years and not more than 42 years as on 10 June 2025.

Educational qualification: Graduation from any recognized university

Physical standards: The candidate must be physically and medically fit in all respects.

Employment: Gainful employment (Central Government, State Government, Semi-Government, Public Sector Undertakings, Private Sector, Self-employment or Own Business.

Note: Serving members of the Regular Army, Navy, or Air Force, Police, General Reserve Engineer Force, Paramilitary, or other similar forces are not eligible.

Candidates are selected through a written exam, followed by assessment by the Preliminary Interview Board (PIB) and Service Selection Board (SSB). Once selected, candidates have to undergo military training at designated Army training centers.

What does the Territorial Army do during war?

In case of war, the Territorial Army can assist the regular Indian Army. The duties of the Territorial Army may include protecting critical infrastructure and supply routes, supporting logistics and transportation units, performing civil-military liaison functions, assisting in disaster response and medical assistance, and ensuring internal security in sensitive areas. The Territorial Army provides the Indian Army with non-combat but important responsibilities to the frontline troops during wartime. With its dual capability of civilian skills and military training, the Territorial Army is an asset in times of national emergency.
